The Hawkes Bay is undergoing an understandable tourism boom. Previously, most itineraries went south to Rotorua and then flew to the South Island. The emergence of Hawkes Bay as a lovely destination has added an extra step to many itineraries.
The area is relaxed - very New Zealand, beautiful coastline, established and superb wineries, and the art deco gem of Napier in the middle of it. If beaches, wine and art deco appeal to you together with an escape from volume tourism destination, take a little detour (as Michelin say) to Hawkes Bay. The rolling hills of the hinterland and accessible mountains further inland also make for some interesting views and places.
Greenhill Lodge is without doubt the top place in the Bay. Set in rural surroundings it is a classic homestead which has hosted the late Queen Mother in her time. The hosts are intelligent and sensitive, and the service of course impeccable. They have also brought on a second property, 10 km up the valley, which is a lovely 1920s private house which can be booked for single-party bookings.
We have developed some favourite activities in this area but are continuing to research and turn over rocks looking for something else. High quality recommendations are:
Behind the scenes wine tour. Informative, really behind the scenes and intelligent.
Horses on the beach.
Private Maori experience.
Napier art deco - either take a tour or take some time out and stroll central Napier. Destroyed by an earthquake, the centre was rebuilt in art deco style leaving a highly unusual consisently art deco feel throughout the place.
Golfing - Cape Kidnappers - probably the most exclusive course in the country.
Kayaking/Hiking in some lovely remote areas.
Or for those who want something a little different - we have obtained access to a remote beach on the Mahia Peninsula (best accessed by helicopter, but also possible with a 1+ hour drive). We work with the owners of the land by the beach to put together a typical New Zealand beach day. The setting could not be more authentic, the set-up is a little rudimentary, but 50 metres offshore from a beautiful beach there are dozens and dozens of crayfish, paua (abalone), kingfish, snapper etc. etc. To this we add boats, kayaks, jetskis and a barbecue of freshly caught seafood to showcase how New Zealanders enjoy the beach.
