Hawkes Bay Day
Horses, wine and Maori
Start the day with scenic drive through some spectacular Hawke’s bay countryside and on to the remote and unspoilt, golden sandy beach that is Waimarama. Here lives our extraordinary Maori elder (Kuia), who lives an inspired life in the rhythms and age old customs of the Maori culture.
On her land experience a formal welcome (powhiri) and Wero (challenge) performed by her son, Te Orihau. Delve into Maori life, both past and contemporary. Listen to her fascinating reality – how things are and what is important to their family, their connection to their land, the importance of whakapapa (lineage) and life amongst her people. An inspirational woman, carrying the mana (respect), courage and relentlessness to keep the culture alive.
Lunch is at a coastal winery, Clearview Estate, where you will be a special guest of the owner/winemaker Tim Turvey. Tim is an excellent award winning winemaker with character to match! A small boutique winery famous for its Chardonnays, big reds and dessert wines. Tim will take you on a personal tour through his vineyard and finish in the winery with some barrel tastings.
After lunch your trusty steed will be waiting to be mounted. Enjoy sweeping views along the coastline to Cape Kidnappers and meander along protected wetlands. Ride through forest and long meadow grass before plunging into the sparkling waters of the Tukituki for a river crossing that is unforgettable and distinctly New Zealand.
Finish the day with a glass of bubbles up Te Mata Peak. An historical land mark that boasts 360 degree views of the region.
Unlike our other special days, this one has been put together with local guiding outfit Long Island Tours. This is a company which we and our competitors use as they are simply so good. In this particular case, there is no need to re-invent the wheel. Long Island specialises in tailor made tours, taking you deep into the countryside to visit special people and places.
