That little ridge in the centre of the photo is where you can find Silver Pine. Obviously the location (on the cross-bar of the H formed between the junction of Lake Wanaka and Lake Hawea) is quite special.
If you have a look on their website, you will also see that the architecture is special.
What is not immediately apparent - and another reason why web-searches alone cannot give you the highest level of quality - is the quality of the hosting.
Hosting is difficult. One client may want an ever-present host welcoming them back from each activity with a drink and a chat. Another may hate it. One client may love one host and hate another. It is very difficult to define quality in terms of hosting. Mike and Sue Yates are what I call extreme high quality. A sensitivity and intelligence together with an eye for detail, a natural like of and interest in people, and a seemingly endless store of wit, stories and life experiences.
And there is something else there too. As an interesting person who is interested in people, Mike has all sorts of contacts and has the touch in terms of putting together interesting activities which are engaging and often unique. As someone who is dubious about the destination management capability of most accommodation providers in this country, I would have no hesitation in taking Mike's advice. He uses the best fisherman I know, Dick Marquand, and offers a day with a professional photographer - apart from a few other gems which I'm keeping quiet about.
