Beyond the obvious and crowded Abel Tasman National Park lie treasures - deserted beaches, the second clearest spring in the world (the first is under the ice in the Antarctic), boutique award-winning wineries, and remote hikes. Time spent in the Nelson and Tasman region allows you to fully appreciate New Zealand's quiet beauty, and is best seen from the water just off a deserted beach.

As soon as you get away from the crowded hiking trails, the region opens up. The rugged west is as remote as anywhere in the country but takes a long time to get to. The hills behind Nelson are quite an adventure playground. The vineyards in Nelson are, in a country full of boutique everything, even more boutique than most. And very high quality. And the arts scene is alive and well.
