New Zealand in June/July/August
Why come to New Zealand in June/July/August? We actually prefer our clients not to come at this time, so we can enjoy some time off, catch up with new product, continue product development and also catch up with some marketing. However, I thought it was time to write something about this time of year in New Zealand which is not without its attractions.
Something which has been at the back of my mind for a few months is the difference between what tourists like doing in New Zealand (see all the instant expert advice on TripAdvisor etc. - something I may tackle next month!), and what locals like doing here. In winter, broadly speaking, the Australians come here to ski and everyone else stays away. This has been fairly graphically illustrated this season where the school holidays on both sides of the Tasman have coincided and the ski fields have been inundated with Aussies, the result of a good marketing campaign. The new skis which make it easier to learn has also resulted in a wave of new skiers on the beginners slopes, mostly sporting Australian accents.
So, what do the locals do at this time of year. Favourite pursuits include:
- Going to Fiji for some 30C+ temperatures and some resort relaxation
- Skiing and heli-skiing
- Going hiking, horse riding, jetboating, eating fine meals
So why should people travel across the world to spend some time in New Zealand during their summer and our winter? The answer is to have an uncrowded beach time on carefully selected Pacific Islands during their best season and to complement that with some uncrowded, fresh and excellent time in New Zealand mixed in with some carefully selected winter sports. It's a wonderfully under-hyped, local-abundant and authentic time of year.
But please, only a few people - we still really enjoy having this country to ourselves for a few months!
